We cannot just stop at ban the box!

We're calling on city and county political leaders to make a public commitment to fair hiring for people with criminal records or to change their hiring policies to open up real opportunities for people with records to get jobs.

Examples of Successful Campaigns:

  Some cities have significantly increased hiring for people with criminal records. Durham NC and San Francisco CA now only reject 2-3% of applicants with criminal records for city jobs.

Durham, North Carolina:

  • Since 2011, overall proportion of people with criminal records hired by City of Durham has nearly increased by 7 fold. It has increased each year, going from 2.25% to 15.53%

  • 96% of criminal applications who got recommended to the last stage were hired.

  • None of the people hired have been fired for illegal conduct

  • There has not been any increase in workplace crime

San Fransisco, California:

  • In June 2015 they have reviewed conviction histories of 12,082 applicants with 11% criminal history.

  • has developed a model hiring process with success

  • has overall, in depth and transparent written policies

  • looks at the time that has passed since the end of sentence;
    5 years for misdemeanor and 10 for felony.
