The stories below are real, from people being effected by hiring discrimination. Not only people with criminal records, but their families and friends as well.

Stories

When you think of someone with a felony, you don’t think of someone who is compassionate, motivated, honest, and hardworking.” But that’s who she is. “You can give me a task to do and I do it 200%, and I don’t give up If I don’t have the answer, I’ll find it. I’m a hard worker

Let them know we’re all human, we make mistakes. These felons, they aren’t bad people they just made bad decisions

“The father to my child was a felon. After I gave birth, 4 weeks after a C-section I started working 3 jobs to support my family. He stayed home with the baby, while I worked back to back to back, then only to return home to sleep for an hour then start my day all over again. I wasn’t able to go to school, I wasn’t able to do things I wanted to do because of his background. I needed to get up every day to make sure my daughter had diapers, to make sure that we had food in the house, that the bills were paid. There was a lot of financial pressure; I was constantly told, ‘you’re never home with the baby,’ ‘you’re a bad mom’. All because he had a felony, and couldn’t get a job.”

I can see a job, read the requirements and know I can fulfill that job but at the same time there’s another voice in me saying, ‘oh hell no, they aren’t going to hire you, because you’re a felon. If you aren’t strong minded, then this will tear you down and bury your self-worth. And when that happens, a lot of people turn back to their old ways of what they know how to do, and that’s breaking the laws.

I’m going to give 110%. And that’s what these people want. If you give them the opportunities, they will not disappoint you. And that’s what people need to understand about us.

Not everybody with criminal records is bad. You’ve got your bad ones and you’ve got your good ones, just like people who didn’t go to jail.

People with records are just as determined and intelligent as anyone. I’m going to be a social worker. They need people who have been through the system, someone who has survived, a conqueror.
